Kings Bay History

The Army began to acquire land in King's Bay in 1954. The reason for this was to construct a military ocean terminal to ship ammunition in the case of a national emergency. When the terminal was completed in 1958, King's Bay was placed in an inactive ready status because of the lack of immediate need for the base.

The Army base was transferred to the Navy in 1978 after a squadron of U.S. submarines in Spain needed a new home. The Navy continued to use this Naval Support Base until 1982 when the support base was re titled as a full Naval Submarine Base. This change was to show the growing significance of the King's Bay base.
